Hello everybody,

For a thesis I got to look through a couple of things and encountered the expression "to receive a welcome shot in the arm" and now wonder what this actually is supposed to mean?

Don't worry about a German translation (even though I would be happy to get one if possible), but it's really important that I at least get to understand what this means.

Thanks a lot in advance!

PS: If possible could you please add if you would consider "to receive a welcome shot to the arm" a metaphor, metonymy, or something else?

I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be taken literal here.... ;)

Hi tina.ina,

The phrase "a shot in the arm" is meant figuratively, and means a boost, of whatever kind. I have even seen a similar phrase used in German: "ein Vitaminstoß":

Hope this helps,
