Repubblica
The republic was founded in Italy after the end of World War II, and was based on the results of the referendum of 2nd June 1946, which abolished the monarchy in favour of a republican state. The constitution drawn up in 1948 established the fact that it was a parliamentary republic.

La liberazione
The Liberation was the conclusive moment of World War II in Italy, at the end of April in 1945, when the forces of the Resistance rose up in the big northern cities (Turin, Milan, Genoa), leading to the surrender and retreat of the German troops before the arrival of the victorious Anglo-American forces. It is commemorated with the Festa della Liberazione, on the 25th April every year.
Mafia
The Sicilian Mafia (also known as Cosa Nostra) underwent a period of great development after World War II, creating an alternative power base that was partly complementary to that of the State. Starting off in illegal activities such as extortion and money-lending, it then took control of the construction industry and the allocation of public contracts, finally taking over drug trafficking, which brought it massive income. The power of the Mafia is all concentrated at the top (a strict hierarchy of families) and it is distinguished by its strong ties to and complicity with the people with political power.
Camorra
Widespread in Naples and Campania, this is not a single criminal organization, but a collection of groups (families) which often fight each other for control of criminal activities. It goes back to the 16th century and has practised extortion for centuries, blackmailing small businesses in Naples. After World War II, and above all in the 1980s, it began to control drug dealing and arms trafficking, prostitution and the allocation of public contracts, developing links with politicians and gaining ever-increasing control over the Naples area.
