Die Wunderkammer als Vorläufer der musealen Sammlung entstand als Versuch, der Unüberschaubarkeit des Universums Herr zu werden und in einem Nebeneinander von Objekten unterschiedlicher Herkunft den Zusammenhang aller Dinge sichtbar zu machen.
Die zusammengetragenen Kunstwerke, Kuriositäten und Exotika luden dazu ein, die Welt im Kleinen zu entdecken.
Für das MdM SALZBURG hat die Künstlerin Barbara Musil (*1972) aus dem Bestand der Sammlung eine Installation geschaffen, in der sie im Sinne einer Wunderkammer in einem gleichwertigen Nebeneinander verschiedenster Kunstwerke eine neue, lustvolle Zusammenschau inszeniert.
