s work is part of a collection that brings together the results of recent research into sauropod gigantism.
The gigantism of these vertebrates, unique in the history of the Earth, raises many questions, such as why no other land creatures have ever achieved this size and what their bauplan, physiology, and life cycle would have been like.
The collection put together by the leading open access journal PLOS ONE consists of 14 contributions from the fields of ecology, morphology, animal nutrition, and paleontology that all address the fundamental question of how the sauropods managed to become so extraordinarily massive.

In a new approach, we search for mouse mutants or knock outs which display obvious distortions of the cortical Bauplan.
We will examine all modules of the whisker-to-barrel pathway, i.e. barrelettes in the brainstem, barreloids in the thalamus and barrels with their associated functional columns in the neocortex, in order to exclude that a certain cortical phenotype is but a copy of subcortical patterning defects.

Ein neuer Forschungsansatz beschäftigt sich mit der Suche nach Mausmutanten oder Knock-out Mäusen, die eine deutliche Störung im Bauplan des Kortex aufweisen.
Hierbei sollen alle Module der Informationsverarbeitung des trigeminalen somatosensorischen Systems untersucht werden, nämlich die Barrelettes im Hirnstamm, die Barreloids im Thalamus so wie die Barrels und die mit ihnen assoziierten Kolumnen im Neokortex.
