Im speziellen beschäftigt sich seine Arbeitsgruppe mit interzellulären Kommunikationsmechanismen welche die Musterbildung in der Ovule oder Samenanlage, dem weiblichen Fortpflanzungsorgan bei höheren Pflanzen, sowie die Gewebemorphogenese in Blüten, steuern.
Nach dem Studium der Molekular- und Zellbiologie am Biozentrum der Universität Basel promovierte er in Basel und Zürich auf dem Gebiet der tierischen Entwicklungsgenetik bei Drosophila (1992).
