Finanzmarktstabilität liegt vor, wenn das Finanzsystem – bestehend aus Finanzintermediären, Finanzmärkten und Finanzinfrastruktur – auch im Fall finanzieller Ungleichgewichte und Schocks in der Lage ist, eine effiziente Verteilung finanzieller Ressourcen sicherzustellen und seine wesentlichen makroökonomischen Funktionen zu erfüllen.
Konkret bedeutet Finanzmarktstabilität somit, dass beispielsweise das Vertrauen in den Bankensektor sowie eine stabile Versorgung mit Finanzdienstleistungen wie Zahlungsverkehr, Krediten, Einlagengeschäft und Risikoabsicherung gewährleistet ist.

Financial stability means that the financial system – financial intermediaries, financial markets and financial infrastructures – is able to efficiently allocate financial resources and fulfill its key macroeconomic functions even if financial imbalances and shocks occur.
Under conditions of financial stability, economic agents have confidence in the banking system and have ready access to financial services, such as payments, lending, deposits and hedging.

Ebenfalls in das Aufgabengebiet der OeNB fallen Routineüberprüfungen von Banken sowie Prüfungen im Anlassfall, wenn Verdachtsmomente vorliegen, oder wenn sie aus Gründen der Finanzmarktstabilität erforderlich sind.
Sollte aus einer Bankenprüfung eine wesentliche Veränderung der Risikolage oder ein Verdacht auf Verletzung von bankaufsichtsrechtlichen Bestimmungen resultieren, teilt die OeNB dies der FMA unverzüglich mit.

Other areas for which the OeNB is responsible are regular inspections of banks as well as ad hoc inspections carried out if any irregularities are suspected or if such inspections are deemed necessary in the interest of financial stability.
If the results of a bank inspection indicate that the risk situation has changed significantly or that there is reason to suspect a violation of supervisory provisions, the OeNB will notify the FMA immediately.
