Under hypoxic / ischemic conditions, the transcription factor HIF-1 ( hypoxia-inducible factor 1 ) regulates the expression of a number of genes that are involved in glucose supply, growth, metabolism, oxidoreduction processes and blood supply.
Because of the role that hypoxia and ischemia have to play in the pathogenesis of tinnitus and hearing loss, the HIF-1 activity and the expression of HIF-1-dependent genes were analyzed in the cochlea under these conditions.
