Obschon die Irischen Wolfshunde zur Jagd auf Rotwild , insbesondere auf Hirsche , bis ins 17. Jahrhundert verwendet wurden , haben sie sich auch zur Ausrottung der Wölfe , welche vor der Urbarmachung der Wälder große Teile Europas heimsuchten , als sehr nützlich erwiesen .
