Die D.O. Rueda (Kurzform für Denominación de Origen = kontrollierte Herkunftsbezeichnung) wurde am 12. Januar 1980 per Beschluss des Ministeriums für Landwirtschaft gegründet.Nach mehrjährigen Bemühungen um die Anerkennung und den Schutz ihrer autochthonen Rebsorte Verdejo, war damit die erste kontrollierte Herkunftsbezeichnung in der Autonomen Gemeinschaft Kastilien-León entstanden.
