Der Name der Rua das Pretas ( Straße der Schwarzen ) ist wahrscheinlich auf die vielen farbigen Dienerinnen, die in den großen Herrschaftshäusern dieses Viertels arbeiteten und ständig diese Straße durchquerten, zurückzuführen.
Die Rua da Mouraria erhielt ihren Namen von der früheren ‘Rua da Moradia’, ihrerseits benannt nach einem bedeutenden Herrschaftshaus in dieser Straße, das zwischen dem 17. und 18. Jh. erbaut wurde und heute das Stadtmuseum, eine Bibliothek und ein Aquarium beherbergt.
In östlicher Richtung finden Sie die Rua dos Netos, die zwischen dem 15. und 16. Jh. von der Familie gleichen Namens der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht wurde, um die Fronleichnams-Prozession hier passieren zu lassen.
