Als Test der von Apollo 12 installierten Seismometer wurde die bis dahin mitgeführte dritte Stufe der Saturn-Rakete ( Saturn V IVB - aus einer fast baugleichen Stufe wurde 1972 das Skylab entwickelt ) auf einen Kollisionskurs mit dem Mond gebracht, wo sie wie eine Bombe einschlug.
