Ziel der Studie war es ursprünglich, die Populationen des Hoogmoeds Harlekinfrosch ( Atelopus hoogmoedi ) zu untersuchen, um herauszufinden, ob diese ( morphologisch ) sehr variable Froschart durch die geplanten touristischen Aktivitäten beeinflusst werden könnte.
Die Ergebnisse sollen mittelfristig in einem nachhaltigen Entwicklungsplan für das Gebiet münden, wobei Atelopus hier die Rolle einer so genannten flagship species zukommen soll, also einer Art, die stellvertretend für den Schutz des gesamten Gebietes steht.
Ein schon so gut wie verlorener Frosch Während der Feldarbeit zu diesem Projekt fiel den Forschern jedoch ein unscheinbarer, nur daumennagelgroßer, brauner Frosch auf, den sie keiner bekannten Art zuordnen konnten.

A frog that is virtually already lost During the fieldwork for this project, the researchers were struck by an inconspicuous brown frog, only the size of a thumbnail, which they could not assign to any known species.
