Nirgendwo sonst gibt es so viele Korallen-, Krebstier- und marine Pflanzenarten, mit über 3.000 Fischarten leben hier doppelt so viele Fischarten wie in jeder anderen Region der Welt.
Die SSME ist Teil der insgesamt 640 Millionen Hektar großen Coral-Triangle-Region und umfasst weite Teile der Anrainerstaaten Indonesien, Malaysia und Philippinen.

Welt- weit landen jährlich mehr als 6 Mio Tonnen dieser Krebstier- schalen auf dem Müll, davon schätzungsweise allein mehrere hunderttausend Tonnen innerhalb der EU [1].
Ein geringer Teil dieser biogenen Ressource wird bereits einer Nutzung zuge- führt und beispielsweise in Asien zur Herstellung von Chitosan verwendet, das für biomedizinische Applikationen oder als Nahrungsmittelzusatz zum Einsatz kommt [2].
