Sie lassen sich nur in der Prometaphase, Metaphase und Anaphase einer Mitose erkennen.Dabei entstehen aus einem Chromosom zwei identische Tochterchromosomen (Terminologia histologica:Chromosomae filialia;englisch:daughter cromosomes).
Sie sind 2 bis 10 µm lang und ihre beiden Chromatiden sind ca. 0,5 µm dick.
