festas juninas
-
Festas juninas are celebrated throughout Brazil. These “June feasts” are held in homage of three saints: santo Antônio (Saint Anthony), são João (Saint John), and são Pedro (Saint Peter), usually outside in an open area decorated with colored banners and lit by a bonfire during the entire party. There are many typical foods, such as canjica de milho (white corn pudding), doce de batata doce (sweet potato paste), pé-de-moleque (peanut brittle), etc. The adults drink the traditional quentão and vinho quente. The height of the party is square dancing and setting off firecrackers.
